Growing animals will be wormed every month until puberty and then to demand but at least twice a year, 4 times per year is recommended. Reminder: Treat as fleas that transmit indirectly larval tapeworms (Dipylidium). It may be interesting to vary the products used. Indeed, to "get used" to the product resulting in lower efficiency: rotation of dewormers are put in place, especially on farms, where the microbe is more important because of the number of animals combined.
Flea treatments, anti tick and anti scab
They are very numerous and varying effectiveness. Products are distinguished by their active ingredient (organophosphorus, organochlorines, pyrethroids etc. ...) and their mode of application (spray spread over the animal\'s coat; spot on: a few drops placed on the skin between the shoulders powders; shampoo, aerosols, and the tablets to be administered orally, injections for cats).
General Remarks:
- Anti parasitic shampoos are mostly shampoos. Afterglow, ie the duration of action produced by this method of administration does not exceed a few days.
- Flea collars are often ineffective in areas favorable for the development of fleas. However this does not cost much to try to see.
- Protection against ticks are not 100% guaranteed. The duration of action of necklaces is variable. Do not forget to change them regularly. It will be advantageous to couple different control techniques (hose + spray and / or pipettes or aerosol) to limit its exposure to ticks. (Do not forget to make the vaccine against babesiosis)
- Generally the best products are sold to the vet. And although most people think that the price of these products is higher than elsewhere at the vet, comparisons can demonstrate that it is not so and that many vets sell these products at market prices even cheaper than in other distribution channels, then a tip: compare before buying!!
- Spots on (or pipettes) are often less effective than spray equivalent (same active ingredient), but much more convenient to administer especially in cats!
You can see the molecules are numerous:
Examples of use:
Blanket fleas and ticks on dogs and amitraz collar pipette imidacloprid + permethrin or fipronil spray or eyedropper of imidacloprid / permethrin
Coverage of the cat flea: imidacloprid + moxidectin or fipronil (spray or pipettes) + lufenuron (tablets or injection every 6 months).
Blanket cat tick: Fipronil pipette or spray.
Your veterinarian will advise you to choose the best options with you, in your context: number of animals, season, size of the problem etc. .......
Anti inflammatory
The molecules are also numerous. Most require a prescription. Attention to the inappropriate use of these products. What you should know:
- The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (steroid = not) have the most impact more or less important gastrointestinal: vomiting, diarrhea possible, or ulcers. They can especially among the older animal worsen renal failure. That is why we often use on animals under treatment at half dose or short courses (5 days). In any event the occurrence of these symptoms you should consult a veterinarian and suspend treatment.
Warning paracetamol is toxic in cats, a 500-mg tablets is enough to cause death.
- Anti inflammatory drugs (steroids =) generally exhibit less disruptive effect in the short term but much more dangerous in the long term. In our opinion the administration of these treatments must be done under medical supervision. Regarding the dose, route of administration, duration of treatment we refer to the prescription or the instructions of the drug.
Note: The extracts harpagophyton interest in long-term treatments on the older animal notammment in osteoarthritis. Indeed, these natural plant extracts have no side effect and are useful in treatment of substance and long-term chronic inflammation in all type osteoarthritis.
Also note, the interest of the repeated injection of special fatty acids with an anti inflammatory remarkable in some painful pathology (dysplasia, etc.).

This review is from: Merial Frontline Plus Flea and Tick Control for 45- to 88-Pound Dogs and Puppies, 6 Month (Misc.)
My dog is a Chow mix and very furry. Ticks are impossible to find under her two layered coat until it's too late. At first, I tried cheaper brands. They work on ticks but do nothing for fleas. Then my vet recommended Frontline. I later tried K9 Advantix since they claim to also kill mosquitos, but I didn't notice any difference with the little bloodsuckers. And the protection from K9 Advantix didn't seem to last as long so I switched back to Frontline.Frontline works great for us. My dog is an outdoor dog and our county reportedly has more deer than people. And with deer come deer ticks. I've seen deer in my back yard and my dog's house is very near the woods for shade. And she likes to take the occasional jaunt through the woods. Still I rarely find a tick on her. And when I do, they're usually dead (or soon will be). I wish I'd known Amazon was selling Frontline for a better price sooner. I've been purchasing only 3 months worth for about $50 from another site... Read more

Frontline Plus is the best way to keep fleas and ticks off your dog. It is applied once per month in about 3 minutes. It seems to have little or no side effects on the dog. It has been used for many years on dogs without problems. I checked all products and asked various vets and everyone agrees that Frontline Plus is the best way to keep ticks and fleas off your dog. The Plus even kills the flea eggs.

I bought Frontline Plus here and NOTHING happened to the fleas. Checking on the Internet I read about COUNTERFEIT Frontline and when I bought Frontline from Petco I could see the difference. Fake ones are in metric, ml, not oz and the packing differs from the original, etc. There's a PDF online from EPA explaining the differences. Just be aware.
